Lyrics from the gospel hymn “If My Jesus Wills”, the origin of “We Shall Overcome,” were penned by Cincinnati composer Louise Shropshire (1913-1993). After receiving a request from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to use the song in a speech, she changed the words “I’ll overcome” to “We’ll overcome,” which then became a resounding hymn of the civil rights movement. In 2013 Reverend Mother Louise Shropshire was inducted into the Ohio Civil Rights Hall of Fame. On October 2, 2014, she was honored at the 6th Ohio Civil Rights Hall of Fame ceremony held at the Ohio Statehouse.
